What to Eat on the First Night of Your Staycation

There’s a moment on every staycation that feels magical.

You’ve arrived somewhere new – a woodland cabin, a shepherd’s hut tucked into a hillside, a campervan parked beside the sea. The bags are unpacked, the kettle’s on, and you’re finally beginning to relax.

And then it hits you.

What are we actually going to eat tonight?

Simple, delicious ideas for glamping, cabins and campervan adventures

There’s a moment on every staycation that feels magical.

You’ve arrived somewhere new – a woodland cabin, a shepherd’s hut tucked into a hillside, a campervan parked beside the sea. The bags are unpacked, the kettle’s on, and you’re finally beginning to relax.

And then it hits you.

What are we actually going to eat tonight?

After a long drive, the last thing anyone wants to do is head straight back out to the supermarket. Yet the first evening of a staycation is often when you most want something special – a simple meal that feels like the start of the holiday.

Over the past few years of travelling around the UK with my daughter (and often our Labrador), I’ve realised that this moment is one of the biggest gaps in the staycation experience.

Beautiful accommodation, stunning views… but very little thought given to what guests actually eat when they arrive.

Here are a few ideas that work brilliantly for that first evening away.

Keep It Simple (But Still Special)

When you’re on holiday, complicated cooking isn’t the goal.

Instead, think about meals that are:

• quick to cook
• easy to clean up
• comforting after a long journey
• just a little bit indulgent

A great first-night meal should feel like a treat, not a task.

One-Pan Pasta Dishes

If your stay has a small kitchen (or even just a hob), pasta is a brilliant option.

Simple combinations like:

  • Tomato, garlic and basil

  • Creamy mushroom and parmesan

  • Chorizo and roasted pepper

are quick to prepare and don’t require lots of equipment.

Add a glass of wine, open the cabin door to the evening air, and suddenly it feels like a proper holiday.

Firepit Cooking

Many glamping sites now include firepits, which can turn dinner into an experience in itself.

Great firepit-friendly meals include:

  • Sausages and grilled vegetables

  • Skewers or kebabs

  • Flatbreads with simple toppings

  • Marshmallows for afterwards (essential)

Cooking outside slows everything down in the best possible way.

“Assembly” Meals

Sometimes the best holiday meals involve very little cooking at all.

Think:

  • Fresh bread

  • Good cheese

  • Charcuterie

  • Olives and salads

Laid out on a table outside a shepherd’s hut or campervan, these simple ingredients can feel wonderfully indulgent.

The First-Night Food Box

One of the simplest ways to remove the stress completely is to plan dinner before you arrive.

That’s actually why I started Glamp Gourmet – creating meal kits designed specifically for glamping and staycations.

The idea is simple: guests arrive somewhere beautiful and can cook a delicious meal without needing to shop or pack ingredients themselves.

For many people, that first evening is when the holiday truly begins.

Why Food Matters on a Staycation

One of the joys of travelling abroad is discovering new food.

But UK staycations can have that same sense of occasion when meals become part of the experience.

Cooking together in a woodland cabin.
Eating outside under fairy lights.
Trying something new beside a firepit.

Those small moments often become the memories people talk about long after the trip is over.

A Final Tip

Before your next staycation, think about the first evening.

A little bit of planning means you can arrive, open a bottle of something nice, and start your holiday properly – without a late-night supermarket dash.

Because the best staycations aren’t just about where you stay.

They’re about how you spend the time once you’re there.

Eat well. Stay wild.
